Melanio Oliva

In 1886, the Statue of Liberty was dedicated in New York City, and Melanio Oliva began growing tobacco in Pinar del Rio, Cuba. Melanio’s endeavors were interrupted while he left the farm to fight against Spain in the Cuban War of Independence. After the war, he returned to his farm with its rich, red soil, resumed cultivation, and began to prosper.
